Dreams of Barack Danced in our heads

Dreams of Barack danced in my head.We did it! We have sworn in our first African American President which the garden was really waiting for. That sounds like a joke but I really mean it. Getting rid of grass for the sake of grass. Putting our land to use for sustenance and sustainabilty is the wave of the future. It's part of this general change Obama's talking about. Helping ourselves..helping others..picking up the pieces of our lives we've let go..taking care of our needs..connecting with our community..working together! We at the Hangar share this vision.

look to the next few posts for reasons why we mulch and why we're using organic hay at the hangar garden..

Much love from all of us at the Hangar

what is permaculture?

My inspiration for this project started with my discovery of the permaculture concept. Here is an excerpt  taken from a fabulous book by Toby Hemenway..Gaia's Garden A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture.

"Permaculture is a set of techniques and principles for designing sustainable settlements." The word is a contraction of both "permanent culture" and "permanent agriculture". "The aim of permaculture is to create ecologically sound, economically prosperous human communities using a set of ethical principles-- care for the earth, care for people, and sharing the surplus."

Some of these principles of permaculture are:
  1. Each element should perform several functions.
  2. Use natural plant succesion to create favorable sites and soils.
  3. Use renewable resources.
  4. Begin garden at the door.
  5. etc.

Hello; first post

My husband and I began this endeavor in mid 2008...I am in love with  permaculture/ sustainable systems/ farming/ creating/ self sufficiency... and so I approached Justin about planting a garden in the back of the Hangar Cafe. So far it's slow moving but I've proven to myself in late fall that plants will grow in soil. I even doubted that. When the first radishes appeared I cried... I can do it!!!!!! So, the project is in full swing... I have lots of pictures and past planting and problems to share... The spring will bring a culinary surprise to the restaurant...
