what is permaculture?

My inspiration for this project started with my discovery of the permaculture concept. Here is an excerpt  taken from a fabulous book by Toby Hemenway..Gaia's Garden A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture.

"Permaculture is a set of techniques and principles for designing sustainable settlements." The word is a contraction of both "permanent culture" and "permanent agriculture". "The aim of permaculture is to create ecologically sound, economically prosperous human communities using a set of ethical principles-- care for the earth, care for people, and sharing the surplus."

Some of these principles of permaculture are:
  1. Each element should perform several functions.
  2. Use natural plant succesion to create favorable sites and soils.
  3. Use renewable resources.
  4. Begin garden at the door.
  5. etc.
